I know better. Scott Rhodes and Hooter my ride leaders for CAF have told us all (many times 😬!) you MUST be careful at railroad crossings!! Well as I was laying in a clump, by the side of the road, with my bike looking like a pretzel and people running toward me asking if I’m all right, I simply felt foolish! The tracks are at an angle, it had been raining and traffic was backed up so I’m slipping by everyone and then bam! 💥
I know it doesn’t look that bad and I’m lucky it wasn’t worse ( just your usual road rash and bruises) but I can’t help hearing my ride leaders admonishments ringing in my head😬! I did know better and what a reminder that in some ways, if you ride 3,500 miles, your going to get complacent and not pay close enough attention!🙁
Vermont is beautiful with it’s many covered bridges and streams! Believe it or not we are getting the remnants of Hurricane Nate up here in New England. The good news is that the weather is warm and balmy. The bad news is, that it’s pouring today!!
Today we are celebrating our anniversary with a day off (Columbus Day) to relax and recoup! We are staying on Squam Lake which you may recognize from the movie On Golden Pond ( Hepburn and Fonda)! The B&B is a beautiful place ( even in the ☔️rain) called the Manor on GoldenPond.
We both had a much needed massage today, a treat from our daughter Katie! I’m afraid I have become addicted to Bio-Freeze, Amy said I smell mentholated all the time😬! The Manor was built on the hill overlooking Squam Lake by Isaac Van Horn in 1907. The Pub is famous and was named after a painting of 3 roosters and in the tradition of English pubs named after farm animals ( to which a Texan guest remarked ” you fellas sure like your chickens round here”) !
Tomorrow we begin our final week of riding with only 300 miles to go! Onward to Maine and a fitting lobster celebration!!🦀
